The Menstrual Hygiene Council is a school-based chapter of my small business designed to help students in particular. Working in schools can be one of the most effective ways to nip period poverty in the bud, by raising awareness and promoting menstrual equity.
We made a poster board to advertise the Menstrual Hygiene Council and to raise awareness about period poverty in our area and how to combat it. To those who joined, are attending meetings, and are officers of the club, thank you! Your contribution is incredibly meaningful. We meet monthly to discuss ways to empower our community and help women feel more comfortable with their periods. After all, this is not an issue we should be shying away from.
Being able to present at an all-staff meeting and donate around 200 menstrual products to classrooms, discuss our second annual hygiene drive, and explain the reason why we are working towards eradicating period poverty in the Sacramento Valley and beyond is an incredible opportunity. This helped destigmatize staff at our school as well and motivated them to care more about the issue.
We were able to spread the word about how the Menstrual Hygiene Council upholds our school’s values in a real-world, impactful application.
Thank you to those who tuned in, we appreciate your time!
We are working with She's the First to run this drive. We will be donating half of the products to the El Dorado Food Bank through the public policy change/Care to Share program we spearheaded and the other half to the Wellspring Women's Center, another incredible organization that works to help women and children in the area. We collected over 800 products for women, wrote handwritten notes for each recipient, and donated them to both organizations.
It was incredible to volunteer with Julie's Purse Project and get the opportunity to help pack over 1500 bags with 15,000 essential products for women undergoing assault and abuse and even facing the effects of trauma and trafficking. One of the most notable items was the emergency security blanket they had placed into every bag. It was incredibly rewarding to be a part of the event and help contribute in such a unique way, and it was great to see the number of women donating their purses from around the country to show their support.
Working with the PTSO, school administration, Board of Education, and District Office, we were able to get approval on our proposal to begin the Bathroom Box Project. After petitioning and presenting to the PTSO, we were able to get a $600 grant for implementation! This project will comprise a discrete set of distributors inside each bathroom stall to promote sustainability and menstrual equity and support Vista students. If everything goes to plan and we are able to make this happen, we want your feedback on how to improve! We will be conducting a survey to ensure permanent funding for the project if it proves to be effective.
At Woolf's Torn Pages, we have consistently worked towards improving the quality of menstrual care everywhere. Through the Menstrual Hygiene Council, we have been able to do just that, by redesigning our bathrooms in collaboration with Aunt Flow!
